WARRIOR
Kate: 3.5 stars
Kate: I like watching MMA and hot guys with their shirts off, so I thought this movie was very entertaining. It had a predictable story, but was worth watching. We watched this movie on Christmas Eve with my family and my sister in law cried at the end. It was her second time watching it too.
***
Premise: Set in the violent world of mixed martial arts combat, this gritty drama follows two brothers at war with each other, who have pursued separate lives. But preparation for a championship bout soon leads the siblings back into each other’s paths. - Netflix

Ruby Sparks

Well what can I say? I lost the bet. Ryan told me I would love this film. I told him the premise sounded stupid and predictable. He told me I would give this movie a higher rating than Safety Not Guaranteed and I said it’s highly unlikely. I mean you tell me, what do you think about the following premise: A young fiction writer writes a love story about a girl who then comes to life…chaos ensues…Watching the preview didn’t necessarily make me rush to click rent on itunes either.
Ryan rented it behind my back. Then we were on the thirty day countdown. He kept suggesting we watch Ruby Sparks. I suggested we watch something different, something better, perhaps…Greys Anatomy? Finally with only a few days to go, I had to agree to watch the film or else our rental money would be a complete waste.
Let me tell you~One of the best movies I watched this year! What a light hearted and creative love story! I highly recommend this one.

Michelle: Why can’t you decide between 3.5 and 4 stars?
Ryan: It’s 4 it’s 4.
Michelle: But you said 3.
Ryan: No I didn’t I said 3.5 to 4 so I’m going with 4.
Michelle: Well why are you going with 4 now?
Ryan: (He’s getting upset now~he’s sitting on the couch while I write this…) Because you pressed me~and I realized I needed to go with 4!
Michelle: But, what was deciding factor for you?
Ryan: I don’t know…
Michelle: WHAT WAS IT?!!!
Ryan: Just with how sincere they were with the film, they could have been goofy about the premise, but they didn’t do that.
Michelle: Yeah, I like how it was sincere. I wish we could time travel. That would be cool.
Premise: Safety Not Guaranteed is a 2012 American comedy drama film inspired by a 1997 Backwoods Home Magazine classified ad – written as a joke filler by Backwoods employee John Silveira – by a person asking for someone to accompany him in time travel (Wikipedia)

Fright Night

Jess: 4 stars

I have never seen the 1985 original of this movie, and I generally find remakes disappointing, but this reboot was a perfect Halloween blend of suspense, humor, teenage awkwardness, and cheesy horror.  Major highlight: Colin Farrell as a bloodlusty vampire.  For the record, I do not feel all googly-eyed about Colin Farrell.  He just happens to make a fantastic vampire, all while solidly nailing an American accent.  The Vegas setting was essential to this entertaining movie that is all the more fun for not taking itself too seriously.  And the fact that Bradon and I were able to watch it with Ryan and Michelle during yet another epic road trip will probably make me feel nostalgic about this movie for many years to come.

V/H/S
Ryan: 3.5 stars

The best part about watching this horror anthology is that it really does feel unnerving. Unlike a typical horror movie where you stick with one story and things often become predictable. The disjointed found footage pieces featured in this film throw you into a chaos filled world that keeps you confused and guessing. Highly recommend it for this halloween season, it was good enough that Michelle was afraid to go to sleep and I decided to take the edge off with some whiskey and 30 Rock before going to bed.

This movie was pretty good. It was entertaining and reminded me of the orgy we had at the beach this summer. Maybe it wasn’t exactly an orgy but we did get naked and go swimming together. It was fun.
The movie had a star studded cast- Jason Sudeikis whose usually pretty funny, Ruxin from “The League” (a great show), the little kid from Freaks and Geeks with the big glasses, Guy Fierri, Leslie Bibb (some people might remember her from the TV show Popular), a girl that played a Russian prostitute on Law and Order, and most importantly Lake Bell. She’s super hot and the only thing that would have made the movie better is if she got naked.

"Byron has always been a lover of women. He’s a romantic, and he loves all of his girlfriends the same way—totally and completely. But he’s grown restless in his middle-age, and recently he has found himself lost in some heavy thoughts about big things like God, and love, and time. So when a demon-obsessed televangelist suggests that he retreat from the chaos of the world, Byron escapes his town and embarks on a spiritual journey of the fantastic kind."
From the description on their website you would think this movie has a story to it. It doesn’t. It makes no sense at all. Its just bizarre but for some reason I sat though the whole thing. I was just about to turn it off and then one of the characters starting doing lines of cocaine and trying to S his own D. So I was like ok maybe this is going to get good. But just like the character trying to felate himself the movie was pointless and achieved nothing
Another waste of time on Netflix

This movie was stupid. We watched it on Netflix because we were bored. Its a waste of time.
There’s a lot of crap on Netflix. Its a problem because their rating system is deceptive. Nothing ever gets zero stars. They want people to think they have a huge selection of great movies so everything is three stars and up. Its ridiculous. Ill try to post all the crap that we sit through so other people dont have to make the same mistakes

Broken English
Michelle: 5 stars
The first time I saw this film I was 25.  I met Ryan at the Landmark theater in Chicago. We had pizza and beers before the film. I was a huge John Cassavetes fan at the time (still am) and was interested to see what Zoe’s film would be like. I remember we biked all the way home from the north side of Chicago to Pilsen and got lost along the way. It was romantic to say the least.
When I first watched the film I realized how the life’s UN-intentions can become a barrier when you hold yourself to the naive ideals of your twenties.
And now here I am watching the film again. I love the the honesty Nora represents. She is trying so hard to find herself in a world where everyone else has already defined her.

MOONRISE KINGDOM
Ryan: 5 stars     Michelle:  4.5 stars
This truly does feel like Wes Anderson’s best film in that in brings together all his stylistic ticks (the ones that alternately annoy some and inspire others) in a way that feels far less self-conscious than ever before. The film just flows and its bitter (just a dash) sweet (more so) tale of young love really provided fertile ground for Anderson.
